Many employers would like to better protect their welders from exposure to hazardous metals and chemicals. However, they don’t want to install a fixed ventilation system because of the expense and lack of flexibility. Respiratory protection may be provided but they require a respiratory program, don’t provide the best level of protection, and may not meet all regulatory requirements.
A very good alternative is a portable fume extractor also known as a smoke hog. It consists of a hood, fan, air cleaner, and duct with an articulating arm. They are one unit that can be moved anywhere in the workspace or from area to area. They also cost a lot less than a fixed ventilation system.
