April 2013

Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone in Boston and West, Texas.

IN THIS ISSUE: Professional Resources and Organizations for Industrial Hygiene and Safety

The purpose of this month’s newsletter is to address some common questions about professional resources and organizations for industrial hygiene (IH) and safety. While there are many introductory courses offered by IH laboratories, OSHA training institutes, and colleges, many of the best learning and networking opportunities are available through professional organizations.

  • American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) is a national organization with more than 10,000 members. More importantly, they have a vast network of local chapters that provide opportunities for learning and networking. Joining a local chapter gives one the opportunity to meet other professionals, many with years of experience. Local chapters put on training seminars at low cost and provide opportunities to work toward advanced certifications. The national AIHA provides educational opportunities including the annual convention and exposition (AIHCE) each May, the Professional Conference of Industrial Hygiene in the fall, on-going e-learning webinars and courses, and archived courses for members on their website.  AIHA provides leadership training for officers in local chapters, runs the accreditation program for industrial laboratories, publishes their own exposure standards (OEL’s), publishes a list of consultants, and works with OSHA to improve worker safety and health.
  • American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) is a national organization for general safety professionals. For more information, visit their website.
  • American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) is best known as the publisher of the most widely accepted occupational exposure standards, the Threshold Limit Values (TLV). It also provides educational materials, webinars, and courses, and participates in the AIHCE and other conferences.

In addition to professional organizations, two important publications provide articles on the latest research in the field. The Journal of Occupational & Environmental Hygiene is published by ACGIH. Synergist is a monthly magazine with articles that affect the profession.
